A spare machine does not work until someone puts the config in 📦

A spare machine is not enough if you just leave it sitting there.

I thought that having a new one meant we were safe, but if the config is not in it, it will not work even if you carry it there.

For a router it is the network settings, and for a VoIP gateway it is the phone number settings. We put those in first, and then we hand it to the customer.

So when I check the stock, I look at both the model number and whether the config is in it.

I thought, “we have it” and “we can use it” are different things.
