About half of my job is doing the work and half is recording it ⚖️
In a big company, there is also quite a lot of work that is “leaving records”, more than the actual work itself.
I think this is probably the same for school teachers, researchers and doctors. To let the people above them, their boss, or for a school the country and the government, understand what work they are doing now, I think there is a system where you answer surveys and write records into a format.
It is probably similar to a doctor leaving a record saying “I did this kind of operation”.
When I am gliding through the actual work it is quite fun, but the job of leaving an accurate record afterwards takes a surprising amount of time.
If I do not, someone pokes at it later saying “what does this mean?”, so I have no choice but to write it carefully.
It feels like the work where I actually move my hands is 50%, and this kind of recording and managing work is about 50%.
